Arsene Wenger faced media ahead of their EPL clash with West Ham United at Emirates Stadium tomorrow. Here's a briefing of what he said.
Team News and Injuries
Arsene Wenger confirmed hamstring injury to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. He is ruled out for 3-4 weeks "It's frustrating for him but he's played more games this season than before. He's shown his importance." Ox will be out for the Enland's international fixtures. Mathieu Flamini is available for the game. Gabriel Paulista will join training on Monday.
Talking of Jack Wilshere, he said "It's very difficult to say when he will be back. We have to respect his recovery." Club captain Mikel Arteta will return to full training today but will be available after 3 weeks. Arsene
Race for Top 4
The competition for top 4 spots is absolutely intense and closely fought at the moment. 9 points separates Manchester City in 2nd place and Southampton in 7th. Wenger gave his opinion on this rat race "Every year gets more different because you have more teams who can compete for it and in future years will be even harder. I like this time of the season because very game is important and you feel it is a period where you need composure, focus and mental strength and it's interesting to watch your players how they respond to that."
On Monaco match affecting this game
Arsenal travel to Monaco on Tuesday. So its expected that Wenger will rotate his squad. "I agree it is a very important game in the Champions League against Monaco but tomorrow is of the same importance and that is why we just have to focus on tomorrow. What will affect my selection is the players who have played a number of games recently. I always rotate game by game but never more than two or three players. I will rest one or two without interrupting the balance of the team."
On New Contracts for Bellerin and Arteta
Recently reports were out that bellerin has been offered a 4 year deal. It is likely to affect out on loan Jenkinson's future at Arsenal. Wenger was positive about it "The first part yes, will it impact on Carl Jenkinson? In my head no."
On Arteta's deal "There is no movement on his contract, not yet no. I would like him to stay on. He has huge experience and is very important to the squad."
On Alexis Sanchez
Wenger was asked of his opinion on his star performer Alexis Sanchez. He praised the Chilean saying "We are very happy with him. He is a credit for your country because he is committed ready for a fight, huge desire to win and he is an exceptional football player. When you are a manger you want a player to develop and express his quality and meets his needs in the way he plays football. He is extremely focused and happy to play and I expect him to continue to develop and become even stronger. That is linked with ability, technique, work in training and confidence. Maybe the position as well. When a right footed player plays on the left he has a chance to score because he has better angles to score and maybe because we play very attacking football he has more chances to score."
English Clubs Champions League debacle
Chelsea crashed out of UCL this week by losing to PSG on away goals - hahaha. It raised back questions of English teams efficiency in this competition.Wenger defended "It would be a bit superficial to just go to that cause because first of all I believe that PSG, Barcelona are great teams and no matter if you have a winter break you can be in trouble against these teams and it's too early to draw conclusions about the efficiency of the Premier League."
That's all you need to know.
