The concluded summer window was very much positive for the gunners. Wenger, again, managed to sign a genuine Superstar in form of Alexis Sanchez and also addressed, though not completely, the key issues of replacing the departed players in the Defensive and Goal-Keeping department. Of the five reinforcements, one was for goalkeeping and two for defense, got two for striking department and none for mid-field (I wasn't expecting any either). They came in and few departed with likes of Thomas Vermalean and Ignasi Miquel, who was thought of providing cover to our current lot of defenders, leaving the club on permanent basis. Without wasting any more time, let's start assessing each signing individually.
First up, Alexis Sanchez. Statistically, the second best performer of Barcelona last season was the first signing of the season which lifted the mood of the fans. He was signed to play as centre-forward and on flanks to bring out the best from Mesut Ozil. The most threatening aspect of his game is pace which was seen missing from the Gunners' game since Walcott's injury. So he is expected to provide pace and more importantly goals to the team. And he has made a good start by scoring two goals in two games before going on National duty.
Next up, Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers. Debuchy was roped in as a direct replacement of Sagna and Chambers to provide cover for RB but due to circumstances, he has been forced to start as centre-half and has impressed in the position claiming Man of the Match award on multiple occasions. They both have seemed to be easing through the transition and got settled quickly in the squad. Proof of that is their recent performances in Arsenal colours.
Moving forward to next player, David Ospina. The Colombian international was signed on back of impressive performance in World Cup and was also being watched by Wenger's scouting team. Though he is yet to make his awaited debut because of injury. But he has recovered and has went on international duty. So expecting him to see in action in our League Cup tie versus Southampton.
Finally, Welbeck. The acquisition of the forward from One of our greatest rival Manchester United was a pleasant surprise to many gooners. This move has addressed the long-standing need of a recognised Forward to support Giroud which became more important due to frenchman's injury. He is expected to start majority of the games till latter's return. The bright aspects of his game are power, pace and mobility (and let's be hopeful of goals as well)
Despite of all the reinforcements, the defensive area seems to be weak in numbers (probably an injury away from crisis) but including Bellerin and Hayden do provide the cover which then questions the quality as the youth prospects have no significant experience of first team football. Nothing much can be done about it now but let's hope we don't have to go through a crisis.
